Of his 151 victories (.665 winning percentage), 98 were in Pac-10 conference games. He was the all-time conference leader, topping Master Coach Don James of Washington (97) and John McKay of S. California (70).
Starting with the 1982 season, he had a streak of eight consecutive wins in bowl games. This was a record at the time, but it was later eclipsed by Bobby Bowden at Florida State.
He won 5 Pac-10 Championships during his tenure, his UCLA coached teams were ranked in the top 10 nationally five times, and he led the Bruins to 4 appearances in the Rose Bowl.
d Coached 34 first team All-Americans and over 100 of his players were selected in the NFL Draft. Coached Hall of Famers Jerry Robinson and Kenny Easley, as well as NFL stars Troy Aikman and Ken Norton. Had numerous assistant coaches who became collegiate head coaches and NFL assistant coaches.
Named Conference Coach of the Year twice, and his 151 wins are the most in UCLA history.
Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2000
